How the speed test works
The speed test in the ExpressVPN apps for iOS and Android measures the speed of the VPN server you are using. Specifically, it measures five things: Download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter, and packet loss.
Download: How fast your device can receive data from a server. Measured in megabits per second (Mbps), it is more common for your download speed to be faster than your upload speed. The bigger the number, the faster your download speed, resulting in a smoother streaming and gaming experience.
Upload: How fast you can send data from your device to other devices or servers. Measured in megabits per second (Mbps), the bigger this number the faster your upload speed.
Latency: Also known as ping, this is a measure of the delay in data packets being transmitted between a server and your device. Measured in milliseconds (ms), the smaller the number the better your connection connection. Also note that the further away a server is from your physical location, the higher the latency will be.
Jitter: A measure of the time delay in sending data packets via your network connection to your device. Measured in milliseconds (ms), a smaller number means you have a more reliable connection.
Packet loss: If one or more data packets fail to arrive at the destination (in this case, your device), pocket loss has occurred. It is measured as a percentage of the packets lost out of the total number of packets sent to the destination. With ExpressVPN, you should experience zero packet loss.

How to run the speed test
To run a speed test on the ExpressVPN apps for Android and iOS:
- Open the app.
- Tap the Speed Test tab.
- Tap the Play button to start the speed test.
It takes a few minutes for the speed test to finish. Once complete, you will see the message Your Speed Test is completed.
